What the Flock is this newsletter?
Welcome to my Substack! Come for the thoughts on my writing process, stay for the dumb puns.
Hi! My name is Sarah Flocken, and I’m an author. I’m also a comedian, improviser, voracious reader, recovering humanities grad student, business owner, public relations consultant, and pun contest host (yes, it’s a thing).
I consider myself a pretty damn good writer. I’ve written millions of words under other people’s names in my PR career, and I’ve written almost as many funny words for myself and others in my comedy career (sketches, stand-up sets, you name it).
But it wasn’t until October 2019 that I took myself seriously enough that way to start writing my first novel.
I’ve been telling people I was working on a book since October 2019, but it wasn’t until August 2022 that I let anyone read it. I started seriously diving into the agent querying process in September 2023. Since then, I’ve been constantly honing, revising, revisiting, and rewriting this manuscript with the goal of eventually getting it published. In the meantime, I’ve learned a TON about myself, about the craft of writing, and about the huge variety of ways people interact with and create stories.
So if you’re interested in hearing about all that, you’re in the right place. This newsletter is where I’ll share news about the novel, updates about my writing process, thoughts on reading and writing stories in this weird, evolving world of ours, and maybe the occasional book or used bookstore recommendation. Because, as you can tell if you follow @sarahflockenwrites on Instagram, I REALLY love used bookstores.
If you’re ready to oPEN up this can of worms, hit the subscribe button below (I told you there’d be puns). Thank you so much for being here and reading, it really means a lot to me.
